When it comes to choosing the right Garage Door for you, your family and your home, there are many factors to consider. These factors may include material, design, colour and functionality. However, there is one extremely important factor that may fall under the term “functionality” and that is whether or not your garage door is automatic or manual.
At Amber Windows, while we completely respect that each customer has their own tastes and preferences, whenever we are asked for our honest opinion on whether it’s best to choose an automatic electric powered garage door over a manual door, our answer is always the same and is always simple: YES!
Yes, this is probably one of the most obvious and un-surprising reasons of them all. But what we’ve found over time is that the “convenience factor” is quite often underestimated, especially when customers plan on having their garage doors fitted in the summer season, when the weather is generally pleasant and sunny. However, we all know that the good old British weather is somewhat inconsistent and not only could we suffer a harsh winter but we have had very cold weather in spring and autumn. When we are being battered by cold winds and heavy rain, this is when the convenience factor really comes in to play. Having to exit a car when it’s freezing cold or chucking it down with rain outside just to open or close your garage door isn’t enjoyable in this type of weather, especially if you have your best clothes on!. How nice would it be to simply press a button and watch your garage door open or close whilst in the comfort of your nice warm car? This has got to be worth the price.
Security
As discussed above, manual doors can be extremely inconvenient, which leads to the higher and most common risk of people leaving their garage doors open while they pop out on a quick errand. Unfortunately, burglars are very much aware of this and will mostly target manual garage doors for this specific reason. It only takes a few seconds for a burglar to break in and steal your valuables and even access your house. Additionally, many homeowners with a manual garage door tend to forget to lock their garage door, which is a major security risk as it provides burglars a great path of least resistance.
Value
Even if you plan on living in your home for the foreseeable future, you can never predict the future or rule out the possibility of listing your home on the market. An automatic garage door can add significant value to your home. Manual garage doors can have the opposite effect and devalue your home. Potential buyers may put in a lower offer for the house to provide them with sufficient funds to install an automated garage door.
Cost
An automatic garage door is always going to generally cost you more than a manual garage door in most cases. However, you need to think beyond this and consider that a quality garage door is designed to stand the test of time and last for decades; the cost of a garage door “per-day” is a matter of pennies. Additionally, when you keep in mind that an automatic garage door may add value to your home it is a great investment.
